Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Demographic Statistics Section, Demographic and Social Statistics Branch, Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Section.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Demographic Statistics Section and within delegated authority, the Statistician is responsible for the following duties:

    Organizes, designs, plans and carries out the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data on demographic phenomena by applying methods of data collection, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases;
    Assists the Editor of the Demographic Yearbook in developing, disseminating, collecting, processing and storing the Demographic Yearbook questionnaires;
    Participates in the development, implementation and management of the Master Demographic Yearbook Database;
  •     Provides training and technical support in the operation of the Demographic Yearbook system of data collection and processing;
  •     Participates in the development and revision of statistical concepts on civil registration and vital statistics, its definitions and classifications by performing methodological research;
  •     Prepares draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assist in drafting relevant reports; organize and participate in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person;
  •     Guides, trains and supervises general service staff; perform other duties as assigned.

Education:
 Advanced university degree (master's or equivalent) in statistics, demography, mathematics, economics, sociology or directly related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  •     A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the area of demographic statistics.
  •     Experience at the national or international level in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data or demographic statistics is required.
  •     Experience in methodological work in the field of civil registration, vital statistics and/or international migration statistics is highly desirable.
  •     Experience in providing support for training, seminars or workshops in demographic statistics is desirable.
  •     Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.

Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
    For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required.
    Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Method

    Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
