Green Empowerment is a growing international development organization with a current annual budget of $1.3 million and a team of 12, including 5 overseas. For 16 years, Green Empowerment has worked with partners around the world to strengthen communities with renewable energy and safe water. We work side-by-side with a growing network of local organizations, primarily in Nicaragua, Peru, Kenya, Malaysia and the Philippines. We are seeking an experienced Financial Manager who is committed to the mission and adaptable to the needs of a dynamic, growing international organization. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills to help us transition to the next stage of growth. International expertise – particularly with USAID grants — is highly desirable.

About the Financial Manager Position:
The Financial Manager works with the Executive Director and Bookkeeping & Database Assistant to manage the financial operations of Green Empowerment. Specifically, they are responsible for general ledger accounting (including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll), preparation of financial statements, compliance with federal funding requirements, financial statement audit preparation and management, generating financial reports to grantors, and regular budget-to-actual reports for the staff and Board of Directors. The Financial Manager reports to the Executive Director and is supported by a part-time bookkeeping & database manager.

General Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to the guidelines, policies and procedures of Green Empowerment and funding partners
  • Develop supportive relationships with funders, bankers, investment managers and other service providers
  • Establish and maintain internal financial controls
  • Maintain organization’s financial procedures manual

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Manage General Ledger Manage Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll functions
  • Prepare GAAP compliant financial statements
  • Manage annual financial statement audit and tax reporting and filing requirements for state & federal agencies
  • Lead the organization’s annual budgeting process
  • Ensure adequate fund balances are maintained in various bank accounts and reconcile all bank accounts
  • Track employee time for cost allocations between restricted funds, admin, general program and fundraising
  • Track restricted funds
  • Manage federal grants ensuring compliance with grant rules, CFR Title 22, and ADS 303
  • Prepare and negotiate Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate (NICRA) submission annually
  • Provide analysis of the organization’s financial trends, efficacy of fundraising strategies and budgeting projections
  • Manage stock, in-kind and implementation of credit card processing system
  • Manage wire transfers to international partner organizations
  • Manage organization’s liability, directors & officers and workers’ compensation insurance
  • Manage employee benefits, including employee health insurance and paid time off
  • Support Executive Director with human resource and other administrative issues, such as overseas registration, work visas, employment status classifications and contract review & compliance
  • Review, further develop and document organization’s financial and administrative policies and procedures, in line with best practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Experience:
  • QuickBooks
  • Excellent Excel skills and proficiency with the rest of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Thorough understanding of non-profit accounting, especially as it relates to revenue recognition and fund restrictions
  • Previous accounting experience at a non-profit organization
  • Familiarity with accounting for federal grants
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation
  • Detail orientated with an eye to timeliness and accuracy
  • Candidate should have good communications skills and be comfortable negotiating terms of contracts with vendors or federal agencies

Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s in accounting or finance
  • Experience with international development organizations
  • Experience managing USAID assistance agreements, familiarity with ADS and CFR requirements
  • Experience with Salesforce.com
  • Experience with international human resource management

Schedule: Flexible, but must partially overlap with traditional daytime business hours, Monday through Friday. Potential to work remotely on occasion.
Status: 75% -100% time.
Salary: Dependent on Qualifications
