BACKGROUND:-

The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), celebrated annually in October, promotes wide-scale advocacy on important issues surrounding disaster risk reduction. The 2013 IDDR specifically and proactively seek to reflect and highlight the needs of vulnerable groups which include persons with disabilities, in the context of increasing disaster risks and building resilience, with the theme of “Disaster Resilience and Disability”. This year the main events for the IDDR will be organized in New York on the 10 October 2013.

Duties and responsibilities: – The Consultant will work at the UNISDR Liaison Office in New York and will undertake the following duties:

• Coordinate all the logistical arrangements for the 10 October IDDR events
• Provide substantive support and inputs in the preparation of the event, including drafting of talking points, remarks and background notes.
• Provide support for the advocacy and communication aspects in the lead up and during the event.

Deliverables:

• Well organized and well attended events on Disaster resilience and disability
• Well written substantive and other background documents prepared timely in the lead up to the event.
• Well prepared, high-quality communications and promotional materials, including flyers, invites, posters and webstories.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education – Advanced University Degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Social Sciences, Communications or related field. A first-level University Degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced University Degree.

Minimum of 2 years of experience in communications, planning, coordinating and organizing large scale events.

Language – Fluency in English is required.

COMPETENCIES

Professionalism – knowledge and understanding of concepts and approaches relevant to disaster risk reduction, practical experience in project management, good research, analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to plan own work and manage conflicting priorities.

Communication – Excellent communication (spoken and written) skills including the ability to convey complex concepts and recommendations to staff at all levels, both orally and in writing, in a clear, concise style that can be readily understood.

Teamwork – Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision.
