DESCRIPTION
Are you passionate about human rights? Do you believe YouTube and mobile video create incredible opportunities as well as serious risks for activists and citizen witnesses worldwide? Witness is looking for an intern to contribute to an innovative project blending news reporting, citizen media, and human rights advocacy.
The Human Rights YouTube Channel (www.youtube.com/humanrights) curates, verifies, and contextualizes citizen video on human rights issues around the world. As breaking news and human rights footage is increasingly recorded by citizen journalists rather than traditional reporters, the Human Rights Channel is at the forefront of international news gathering and human rights investigation.
The Curation Intern will work with the Channel curator to source and research human rights footage created by citizens around the world. The position blends timely news reporting with human rights research and writing for the web. As part of a small team, interns have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the editorial content of the Human Rights Channel and to enhance their knowledge of international affairs and new media activism. They are expected to maintain attention to detail and strong journalistic and human rights ethics.
Objectives include:
Learning international online news reporting and research skills
Assisting with research into human rights issues and events via videos, news articles, and reports
Understanding the potential of YouTube and social networks to source, investigate, and distribute information on underexposed human rights stories
Working with Curator and other interns to use social media (Twitter, Google+, etc.) to distribute content and engage with followers
Actively contributing to the Witness blog with analyses of citizen video
All interns are expected to spend between 20-30% of their time engaged in administrative support.
