POSITION SUMMARY:
ICAP at Columbia University is conducting CDC- and foundation-funded research studies that aim to strengthen health systems and health service delivery in South Africa. The focus of these studies includes the integration of services for HIV and non-communicable diseases (NCD) and the expansion of integrated primary care services in rural settings. The New York Research Coordinator is a full time position with duties split between at least two studies.
With support of the senior study staff, the research coordinator will be responsible for providing overall technical support with regard to study implementation including development of standard operating procedures, training of study staff, data management, report writing and support for all study procedures at study sites located in South Africa. The research coordinator may also participate in quantitative data analysis as needed.
The research coordinator will work closely with staff in the ICAP-South Africa office and will conduct periodic visits to study sites to support study implementation, assess data collection practices and ensure compliance with standard operating procedures. The research coordinator will also conduct routine data quality assessments to ensure accuracy of data and will provide additional training support as needed.
This position is grant funded.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Specific responsibilities include:
Oversee and assist with study implementation including development of standard operating procedures, preparation of documentation for IRB submissions, and provision of on-going technical support to ensure successful implementation of the study.
Assist ICAP-South Africa staff to manage all study-related activities at designated study sites including coordination and on-going technical support for all on-site study staff.
Oversee on-site data management for the study including facilitating submission of data from the on-site study teams to the ICAP-New York offices.
Oversee data quality assurance for the study through routine data quality checks and assessments as per study standard operating procedures.
Assist ICAP-South Africa staff to ensure on-site adherence to the protocol and standard operating procedures for study procedures; ensure adverse event reporting to the study principal investigators.
Provide weekly updates and communicate regularly with senior study staff to inform them of study progress and any challenges encountered at the sites.
Assist with other aspects of the study as directed.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Periodic travel to study sites in South Africa. Each trip would average 1-2 weeks with approximately 3 trips per year.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience plus four (4) years of related experience in public health.
Master’s degree in public health, health management information systems, statistics or related field, preferred.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and practical experience in health-related research, including familiarity with adherence to research protocols, data collection procedures and ethical requirements of human subjects’ research.
Experience with health systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
Experience with Microsoft Office suite applications, including MS Access.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience managing research in low-resource settings, including overseeing data collection and conducting data quality assessments.
Experience with database management and quantitative data analysis.
