Chris Lewis has been an inspiration to both young and mature people with his courage in adversity, wonderful sporting skills and community service with young Indigenous people.
He espouses great family values and has worked for the betterment of life in the community. In 2000, Chris Lewis received the John Curtin medal for his role as an Indigenous leader and his community work.

The purpose of the Chris Lewis Scholarship is to encourage and reward an Indigenous Australian student who can demonstrate a commitment to the Indigenous community and demonstrate academic potential.

Value
The scholarship will provide a cash payment of $1,000 per semester (based on a full time study load of at least 75 credit points each semester) to assist with costs associated with studying for the normal expected duration of the degree for which the scholarship is offered.
Payments occur post census date each semester. Payments will be made approximately mid-end April and September each year.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria to be considered for a Chris Lewis Scholarship:
1. Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
2. Have selected Curtin University as a first or second preference through TISC to undertake an undergraduate degree
3. Be undertaking the first semester of their first undergraduate degree or enabling program at Curtin University in semester 1, 2014
4. Be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported place
Enrolment requirements
Unless there are exceptional circumstances such as, but not limited, to medical or family reasons, students must meet ALL of the following:
1. Remain enrolled in initial course of study
2. Maintain a full time study load of at least 75 credit points each semester at Curtin University
3. Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 50 each semester
4. Fail no more than one enrolled unit each semester
Scholarship continuity is subject to meeting satisfactory academic progress as outlined above. Progress will be assessed at the end of each study period. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, a recipient with unsatisfactory progress or who breaches the scholarship conditions shall be ineligible to retain the scholarship. Exceptional circumstances must be forwarded to and shall be at the discretion of the Scholarships Office.
Changes to enrolment
If a recipient intends to do any of the following they must also apply in writing to the Scholarships Office (scholarships@curtin.edu.au) for approval BEFORE the change.
Change from full time enrolment: The Scholarships Office will advise how the change will affect your scholarship.
Change of course: The Scholarships Office will advise how the change of course will affect your scholarship.
Leave of absence: If approved the maximum period of leave is 12 months.
Withdrawal or Terminated from units or course: A student who withdraws from their units or course of study, or has been terminated from studies will become ineligible for continuation of the scholarship, will not receive any further payments and will be required to repay to the University the stipend awarded for that study period if applicable.
How to apply
Application process
An applicant must submit a completed application form with supporting documents attached by 4:00pm on the scholarship closing date, to the Scholarships Office at the Bentley campus.
Incomplete Applications or applications missing documentation will not be assessed.

Applications will be assessed by a selection panel using the following criteria:
1. Demonstrated academic potential
2. Demonstrated commitment to the Indigenous community
3. Responses to questions in application
4. Receipt of an offer of a place into an undergraduate degree at Curtin University in 2014
The scholarship(s) will be awarded if there are candidates of sufficient merit.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application via email in mid -January
In order to accept the scholarship, a recipient will be requested to return signed acceptance documents.
If a recipient wishes to defer their scholarship, they will need to complete the necessary paperwork that will be included with their offer of a scholarship.
Once the scholarship has been accepted, the scholarship will commence from the first semester of study.
This scholarship is not transferable to another campus or university.

Students may apply for as many scholarships as they are eligible to apply for however, will only be awarded up to one Curtin funded continuing scholarship. A continuing scholarship is defined as a scholarship that has more than one payment. A Curtin funded scholarship is a scholarship that is solely funded by Curtin and is a non industry funded scholarship.
Students are allowed to hold concurrently one continuing Curtin funded scholarship and one Industry funded scholarship. Alongside the continuing scholarships, students can apply for and hold unlimited one-off payment scholarships (grants, bursaries).

Taxation
Generally scholarship money paid to full-time students is not treated as taxable income, but if your study load is less than 75 credits (part-time) your scholarship money is not tax exempt. Other than the full-time study requirement, the general rule is that scholarships are exempt from taxation unless:
it is a condition of the scholarship that a recipient is required to undertake activities that are of use, help or benefit to the scholarship provider - then the student is rendering a service by agreeing to undertake those activities;
during or upon completion of the degree for which the scholarship is awarded a candidate is required to become, or shall continue to be, an employee of the funding body; or
an award is received by a student where the scholarship is not provided principally for educational purposes.
