Trait Conversion Breeder

Monsanto is seeking a highly qualified and motivated scientist to work as a trait conversion breeder within the North America Corn Trait Integration team.  The conversion breeder will utilize the latest breeding technologies to develop and test high quality trait conversions for agronomic traits.  This role is central in delivering commercial trait packages in Monsanto elite germplasm.  Success will require effective interaction with a broad array of Technology teams including Trait Field Solutions, Corn Technology, Regulatory, and Biotechnology.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Responsibilities:
         Manage introgression of corn traits into elite inbred lines using marker assisted selection and other breeding methodologies.
         Evaluate performance of converted inbreds and hybrids.  Make advancement decisions to support the commercial pipeline.
         Actively participate in multidisciplinary teams focused on trait development and deployment.
         Contribute to technical and logistical innovation in the trait conversion process.  File invention disclosures as appropriate.
         Stay current on relevant technical advances.
         Follow all ESH procedures and promote ESH protocol implementation across Trait Field Solutions teams.
Ensure that all activities are conducted within compliance and stewardship guidelines, and maintain a heightened awareness of opportunities for reducing risk.
         Work within the framework of ISO 9000 Quality Management.

Qualifications:
Required Skills / Experience:

         Ph.D. in plant breeding, agronomy, plant physiology, or a related field or MS degree and 5 years of experience.
         Strong background in plant breeding, genetics, statistics, and molecular technologies.
         Field research expertise.
         Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, and innovative.
         Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
         Strong project management skills.
         Significant travel required in peak seasons.

Desired Skills / Experience:

         Applied plant breeding expertise.
         Experience with corn research.
         Strong record of innovation and process improvement in plant breeding, trait integration, or trait development research.
         Advanced knowledge of Monsanto corn germplasm and plant breeding methodologies.
         Strong understanding of database systems and management of large data sets.
         Strong operational familiarity of Monsanto IT systems.
