 The primary responsibility of this role, as a Scientist, is to use bioinformatics and molecular biology tools to discover novel genes from microbes that will improve agronomic performance and value in key crops. These traits include but are not limited to insect and nematode control, herbicidal resistance, and disease control. Target crops include soybean, cotton, corn, canola, rice and wheat. The main source of genetic material for sequence analysis is a large microbe collection.

The incumbent will: Utilize bioinformatics tools to analyze DNA sequences from high throughput sequencing of microbial genomic DNA; Identify genes of interest from de novo genomic assemblies; Validate gene sequences using molecular biology tools; Analyze genes using various software programs; Help improve sequence databases to aid in discovery and research projects; Communicate with up- and down-stream scientists working with genes of interest.

The selected candidate is required to possess the following: M.S. with a minimum of 2 years” experience or Ph.D. in genetics/molecular biology/microbiology/bioinformatics with experience in bioinformatics and molecular biology. Demonstrated skills with bioinformatics tools involving genome analysis and expertise in various sequence analysis software such as NGS assembly programs, etc.; Hands-on experience and expertise with recombinant DNA technologies in the following: PCR, primer design gene cloning and library construction;
Experience working in a high-throughput research environment; Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and the ability to adapt to the atmosphere of a dynamic research organization; Creativity and flexible thinking; Attention to detail and excellent organizational and record-keeping skills; Proficient verbal, written, and presentation skills. Preferred qualifications: Previous experience in a fast-paced research environment; Experience in microbiology; Experience with industrial crops; Experience with B. thuringiensis. * Salary and grade level will be commensurate with experience and/or education level.
