Area Orchard Systems Advisor - serving UCCE Yolo, Sacramento and Solano Counties (AP#13-21)
Headquartered in UCCE Yolo County
The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), a statewide program with local development and delivery, is seeking a Cooperative Extension academic advisor to conduct a multi-county-based extension, education and applied research program in the area of orchard management systems. The Advisor is responsible for extending research-based information on all aspects of pomology with particular emphasis in almonds, walnuts, and dried plums (prunes).
The Orchard Systems Advisor will facilitate interactions and information exchange among campus-based academics, CE Advisors and commercial stakeholders. Focus is expected to be directed at maximizing sustainability in nut and fruit orchards throughout the three counties. The major commodities include almonds, walnuts and dried plums.
Other fruits, nuts and olives are grown in the region, though acreage is much smaller for these crops.The academic in this position will be expected to interact with UC ANR Program Teams, Specialists and others within the research/extension network to develop, strengthen and expand the local delivery of statewide programs.
All ANR CE academic appointees are responsible for performance in the areas of extending knowledge and information, applied research and creative activity, professional competence and activity and University and public service.
Coordination of program activities with other farm advisors in the same three-county region covering some tree crop commodities and issues will be necessary.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A minimum of a Master's Degree is required, though other advanced degrees are encouraged, in disciplines such as biological, agricultural, plant science, or a closely related field, with an emphasis in pomology.
Additional experience working with air quality, water quality, and/or soils is desired. Post-graduate agricultural experience in applied research, education, or in private industry in fruit and nut crop production is preferred. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are required.
A demonstrated ability in applied agricultural research and extension is desirable. Ability to communicate effectively in a second language is desirable. Must acquire a California Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) within nine months from employment.
SALARY:
Beginning salary will be in the Cooperative Extension Assistant Advisor Rank and commensurate with applicable experience and professional qualifications.
